Back in April 2024, Debs Tasker and Chumani Ward had a vision. That vision was called South West Saints FC and is one of the most important clubs in terms of redefining women’s grassroots football with bold creativity, ambition, and style. They’re here to celebrate every player’s achievements and put women’s football front and center — no hiding in the shadows of the men’s game.
But what makes this particular team different? Their commitment to creating a team where every player is valued, no matter their experience level. Some come with academy roots, others barely kicked a ball until last year — but have taken to it brilliantly — and some are rediscovering their love for the game after spending time away from the pitch.
The community these wonderful people are building is incredible, with friendships developing quickly both on and off the pitch, creating a tight-knit squad where everyone feels part of something special.
Off the pitch, they tend to stand out, too. Their amazing home kit, inspired by a map of South West London and sponsored by Tooting’s Tolian’s Deli, reflects the individuality of the club. Even their photographer, Marcel, couldn’t resist adding one to his growing collection.
Style and self-expression are becoming key in women’s football, and we embrace this, because looking good and playing great go hand in hand. To quote them directly: ”Our only regret? A white kit. We may have bought Chumani some Vanish for Christmas…”
While they’re currently entirely women-run, their vision for the future of women’s football includes genuine male allyship. True allyship goes beyond words — it’s about sharing resources, stepping back when needed, and actively challenging the structures and cultures that hold women’s football back. Advocating for this shift is one of their biggest passions, ensuring the game becomes stronger and more inclusive for everyone.
Before their first season even began, they made waves by winning two Amateur FA tournaments over the summer. Now, as 2024 ended with them sitting top of the league, they’re proving in 2025 and beyond that creativity, community, and passion are always a winning combination.
